Netball

Only players who want to play competitively will be required to trial for teams. Students who wish to play socially will be assisted to form teams over the next few weeks.  Playing socially will still be at the same time Saturday mornings but in one of the lower grades.

Every team is required to provide an umpire. It is the responsibility of the teams to fulfil this requirement every week. Each team is also responsible for paying their umpire each week which is part of the managers role. This is usually determined by what certification the umpire has, but needs to be negotiated with the parents of the players and the umpire.

Year 8 competition – Division 1 and 2 Grades

Teams in these divisions must supply a current NNZ Centre Award Qualified Umpire, who is reasonably fit and capable of umpiring these more competitive games. These Umpires will be allocated to games throughout the season including semi-finals and finals.

Year 8 competition – Div 2 and below / Year 7 all divisions

Umpires in these divisions and grades can be on the Learn to Umpire pathway or if the Umpire has no qualification, they must have a reasonable fitness level and capability to Umpire in line with the 2024 Rules of Netball. These Umpires will umpire their own teams, for round robin play, but will be allocated for semi-finals and finals.  All Umpires who umpire the Intermediate competition must register upstairs in the Harbourside Lounge their attendance with the Umpire Coaches on Duty before their game/s, and Umpires who are on the LTU (Learn to Umpire) pathway should add their game times to the Umpiring Coaching board. The Sports Co-Ordinator will also try to source some Umpires from Ōtūmoetai College.

Every team also needs a coach and a manager to be able to register so we do rely on parents to fulfil some of these roles.  Students need to be keen and able to make the commitment to trainings and playing on Saturday’s at The Tauranga Netball Centre.

All Intermediate Teams will start grading on Saturday 10th May 2025.  First Game will be on Saturday 17th May.  Semi Finals and Finals are on Saturday 23rd August 2024 (expect time changes). NO GAMES will be played on 21st June, 5th July and 12th July 2025.
Year 8’s will generally play at 8:00 am and Year 7’s will generally play at 9:00am. Playing time is 4 x 12-minute quarters, 2 minutes at the quarter breaks and the half time break. All timing is controlled by TNC on a central sound.

Trials

Jodi Tod will be running our trials this year as a completely independent selector. She has played netball for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, Northern Mystics and the Silver Ferns squad. Since her playing career ended Jodi has been involved in coaching, selecting, and training camps within many Bay of Plenty schools.  We will also have some teachers involved to help Jodi as there is always a large amount of students trialing. 
Trials will be happening in separate year groups and your child should get three chances to trial. Please can you make sure your child is at at least two of the trial dates so they can been seen playing. There will be no other dates available for your child to trial unfortunately. These will be on the bottom turf at Ōtūmoetai Intermediate School as follows:
Yr 7 – Sunday 16th March – 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Yr 7 – Wednesday 19th March – 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Yr 7 – Friday 21st March – 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Yr 8 – Sunday 9th March – 9:00 am to 11:00 am
Yr 8 – Wednesday 12th March – 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Yr 8 – Sunday 16th March – 9:00 am to 10:30 am
Students need to be ready with appropriate footwear, P.E gear and drink bottle.
The cost for playing Netball this season will be $100. This cost includes payment for trials, team registrations to The Netball Centre, Netballs, bibs, first aid essentials etc. Once teams have been formed you will get invoiced. Once teams are confirmed with coaches and managers uniforms will be issued.

Basketball

Basketball League dates are 12th May – 18th August. NO GAMES will be played on 2nd June (King’s Birthday). Games are played at Mercury Baypark on Monday nights.
 2025.  The fees for the season are $145 per player. This includes registration for the Monday night league, referees, uniforms, basketballs and first aid essentials. This also includes the new annual Basketball Development levy of $5 per player for Under 14 year olds that Basketball NZ has enforced. Unfortunately fees continue to increase each year from Bay Venues.
Teams will be confirmed in Week 7. Fees have to be paid in full by Thursday April 10th for teams to be registered by Friday 11th April 2025. If some fees haven’t been paid in teams then unfortunately the whole team cannot be registered and those that have paid will get refunded. These fees can be paid off over the 3 weeks if needed.
MOUTH GUARDS ARE COMPULSORY FOR ALL COMPETITIONS.

All players that wish to play competitively will have to trial, if they want to play social they don’t need to attend trials they will just be placed in a team if we have the numbers and you will be able to indicate their preference below.

Please be aware that your child’s first priority is to play for the school. If they are selected for a school A, B or C team, they will remain in this team and can not choose to play for a social team.
Every team also needs a coach and a manager to be able to register so we do rely on parents to fulfil some of these roles. Each team must provide one person to complete the score bench for their own game. This person must be different from the coach, and not part of the playing team.

Students need to be keen and able to make the commitment to trainings and playing on Monday’s at Mercury Baypark. Trials will be happening Week 5 and 6. We will be trialling during lunchtimes on the bottom turf, and the students will be told when they are required through the daily notices.

Week 5 – Thursday 6th March & Friday 7th – Year 8 Boys lunchtime trials
Week 6 – Monday 10th & Friday 14th – Year 7 Boys lunchtime trials
Week 6 – Wednesday 12th – Girls lunchtime trials
We may have callback trials if needed on other days, but this will be posted in the daily notices.

Hockey

Games are played on Friday nights. Games are played at either Tauranga Hockey Turf at Mt Maunganui, Boys College or Bethlehem College.

We will expect to have a Girls A Team, a Boys A Team and a Mixed A Team. All other teams will likely be mixed teams but this depends on numbers. We will possibly have a Y7 A Girls team pending numbers.  If your child just wants to play socially, they do not have to trial but we may do a bit of a muster depending on how many students we get, to see where their skills are so we can place them in a team accordingly.

The Kwiksticks Intermediate competition is 7 aside Hockey. This means teams consist of 6 field players plus a goalie.

The requirement for teams to include a goalie in the top 4 grades rather than just the top 2 grades are to help address the shortage of goalies being experienced by schools at the secondary school level. The lower grades of course can also include a goalie, but this will be optional.

Girls Trials:
Sunday 9th March 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Sunday 16th March 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Boys Trials:
Tuesday 18th March – 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Thursday 20th March – 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
 
These are held on the school turf.

Please make sure your child is ready to go on time and has all the gear they need, ie: suitable shoes, shin pads, mouth guard, hockey stick and a bottle of water. The school can provide goalie gear.

Cost: 

The fees for hockey for 2025 are $180.00. (not including umpire costs).  Fees are due by 9th of May 2025. If fees are not paid in full or we can’t see you paying these off regularly, your child will not able to play. If you would like to set up a weekly payment plan please let the Sports Co-ordinator know.  These fees cover the cost to enter the Kwiksticks competition and first aid essentials. Teams have to pay affiliation fees, competition game and turf fees and a turf renewal levie.
Please note for the Girls A Team there will be an extra cost of $80.00 per player to cover the cost of weekly training at Tauranga Hockey Centre which makes the total $260.00 for the season if your child makes it into the Girls A team.

We endeavour to place every student in a team. If your child no longer wants to play after trials please get in touch with the Sports Co-ordinator as soon as possible, as this affects team numbers.
